$3B LA Convention Center plan advances with pre-Olympic target completion date
After more than 10 years and millions of taxpayer dollars, the Los Angeles City Council has voted to move forward with plans to expand the Los Angeles Convention Center, with a target completion date before the 2028 Olympics.
The long-awaited expansion of the Los Angeles Convention Center is finally moving forward, with the city council voting to approve the latest plans. The expansion will add 190,000 square feet of new exhibit hall space, nearly 40,000 square feet of meeting space, and a 100,000-square-foot multi-service room.
The project has been in the works for over a decade and has already cost taxpayers millions of dollars. However, with the 2028 Olympics on the horizon, the city is eager to push forward with the expansion in order to attract more conventions and events.
The expansion plans have faced their fair share of controversy and delays, with various proposals and competing interests causing roadblocks. One of the biggest hurdles was securing funding for the project, with the city ultimately agreeing to contribute just over $2.6 billion from its general fund.
While some have criticized the use of taxpayer money for the expansion, proponents argue that it will bring economic benefits to the city through increased tourism and business opportunities. However, others worry about the potential for corruption and influence games in the development and approval process.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the expansion plans are expected to be completed before the 2028 Olympics, with a target completion date just in time for the major event.
