Amazon and Piper Sandler signed NYC’s largest office leases last month, both in Midtown West
Despite WeWork appearing on both sides of the list, Amazon's expansion into a WeWork-operated building in Times Square took the top spot for largest office leases in NYC last month.
It seems like WeWork, the once-popular co-working company, just can't stay away from the spotlight. In the list of NYC's largest office leases last month, WeWork appeared on both sides as both tenant and landlord, but it's Amazon's expansion into a WeWork-operated building in Times Square that took the top spot.
The ecommerce giant signed on for a 259K square foot expansion in the WeWork-operated building at 1440 Broadway in Times Square. The building is owned by HJB LLC, a partnership between The Moinian Group and SL Green Realty. Cushman & Wakefield represented WeWork in the deal, with a team including Theodora Livadiotis and Anthony LoPresti.
Interestingly, Amazon was also involved in the second-largest office lease last month, signing a deal for 160K square feet at 787 11th Avenue in Midtown West. The building is owned by Tishman Speyer, who was represented by a CBRE team led by Mark Ravesloot and Michael Laginestra.
It's no surprise that Amazon, one of the largest companies in the world, continues to expand its footprint in New York City. However, the role of WeWork in this top lease raises questions about the company's current state and the potential conflicts of interest in its operations.
