"Big Plans for Hawthorne Plaza Mall, But City Still Waiting for Action from Owners"

"Abandoned for 25 years, Hawthorne Plaza Mall's $500 million overhaul remains stalled despite court order and cancelled development plans."

After sitting abandoned for 25 years, the Hawthorne Plaza Mall may finally see some action as a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge has ordered the property owners to secure the site and come up with a plan for redevelopment or demolition. The 900,000-square-foot property has been subject to numerous development proposals over the years, but nothing has come to fruition.

In 2016, the owners filed plans for a $500 million overhaul of the site, which were approved by the City Council. However, the plans never moved forward and were eventually cancelled by the city in 2018.

The City of Hawthorne is still waiting for action from the owners, who have yet to secure the site or come up with a new development plan. Despite the court order, it is unclear if anything will actually change for the abandoned mall.

"The City Council approved them, but nothing happened. So in 2018, the city canceled the plans," reads a report from LAist.
