HPD, Shelter Rock Builders, and CPC complete Phase I of affordable housing project in Brooklyn with local elected officials.

The New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) has announced the completion of Phase I of the Bedford-Stuyvesant North & Central development in Brooklyn. The project, a collaboration between HPD, Shelter Rock Builders LLC, and The Community Preservation Corporation (CPC), delivers 31 new affordable homes across 11 lots in the neighborhood.

The project was made possible through HPD's Open Door program, which aims to increase affordable housing options in the city. The completion of these homes was celebrated in collaboration with local elected officials, including Councilmember Chi Ossé.

"We are thrilled to see the completion of Phase I of this much-needed affordable housing project in Bedford-Stuyvesant," said Councilmember Chi Ossé. "This is a great example of how public and private partnerships can work together to create more affordable housing options for our communities."

The Bedford-Stuyvesant North & Central development is just one of many projects being completed through HPD's Open Door program, which has committed to creating 300,000 new affordable homes by 2026. However, some critics have raised concerns about the program's effectiveness in actually providing affordable housing for low-income residents.

"While it's great to see affordable housing being built in Bedford-Stuyvesant, we have to question the impact of HPD's Open Door program in truly addressing the city's affordable housing crisis," said a spokesperson for the Coalition for Affordable Housing. "We need to see more concrete actions being taken to ensure that these homes are truly affordable for those who need them most."
