Controversial Developer Joel Werczberger Plans to Build High-Rise on Historic Clinton Hill Street

Despite community pushback, Joel Werczberger of Watermark attempts to push through plans for a high-rise on a historic street in Clinton Hill.

Brooklyn's beloved Clinton Hill neighborhood is once again facing controversy, this time in the form of real estate developer Joel Werczberger. The owner of Watermark has filed permits for a six-story residential building at 102 Downing Street, a historic street that has long been cherished by local residents.

Located at the intersection of Downing Street and Putnam Avenue, the proposed development site is just steps away from the Franklin Avenue subway station, making it a prime location for commuters. However, the potential high-rise has sparked outrage among community members who fear the impact it will have on the neighborhood's historic charm.

Despite community pushback, Werczberger seems determined to move forward with his plans. As a representative for Watermark stated, "We are excited to bring much-needed housing to the Clinton Hill area and believe this development will enhance the neighborhood's overall appeal." However, many residents remain skeptical of these claims.

Local preservation groups have also expressed concerns over the proposed development, citing the potential destruction of the neighborhood's historical character. "Clinton Hill has long been a haven for those seeking a glimpse into Brooklyn's past. We cannot allow developers like Joel Werczberger to tear down our history for the sake of profit," stated a representative for the Clinton Hill Historical Society.

Despite the controversy, it seems that Werczberger's plans will move forward. With the permits officially filed, construction for the high-rise could begin in the near future, much to the dismay of many Clinton Hill residents.
