"Harry Macklowe and SK Development's Expansion Plans for 809 Madison Ave. Raise Eyebrows on Manhattan's Upper East Side"
"Expansion and residential reconfiguration of 809 Madison Avenue by Macklowe and SK Development stirs controversy in UES."
Renderings have been revealed for the controversial expansion of 809 Madison Avenue, a 12-story building on Manhattan's Upper East Side. The project, designed by Robert A.M. Stern Architects, has been spearheaded by developers Harry Macklowe of Macklowe Properties and SK Development. With plans to add three additional floors and convert the interiors into single-floor condominium units, the project has raised concerns among residents and industry professionals.
The 159-foot-tall structure will not only see a vertical expansion, but also a horizontal extension on its eastern elevation. The expansion will also include larger windows, changing the building's overall appearance. The project also includes a sprawling penthouse with a 1,500-square-foot private terrace.
SLCE Architects is the architect of record for the property, located on the corner of Madison Avenue and East 68th Street. While the project is still in its early stages, some see it as a blatant display of wealth and disregard for the existing community.
One anonymous resident of the UES said, "This project is just another example of developers like Macklowe and SK Development catering only to the ultra-wealthy, disregarding the concerns and needs of longtime residents."
