Housing Lottery Launches for Marcus Garvey Building G in Brownsville, Brooklyn

Affordable housing lottery for 109 units in Marcus Garvey Building G, developed by L+M Development and Services for the UnderServed.

The affordable housing lottery for Marcus Garvey Building G, an eight-story residential building located at 305 Chester Street in Brownsville, Brooklyn, has officially launched. The building, designed by SLCE Architects, offers a total of 109 units and is being developed by L+M Development and Services for the UnderServed.

Available on NYC Housing Connect are 53 units for residents at 70 percent of the area median income (AMI), with eligible incomes ranging from $70,903 to $140,630. These units include 11 studios, 27 one-bedroom units, 10 two-bedroom units, and 5 three-bedroom units.

The project has been met with some controversy, as many local residents are skeptical about the true affordability of the units. One resident, who wished to remain anonymous, stated, "It's great that they're offering affordable housing, but who knows if it will actually be affordable for us? We've seen developers cut corners before." This sentiment is not uncommon in the notoriously expensive New York City real estate market.

Despite the skepticism, L+M Development and Services for the UnderServed remain committed to providing affordable housing options for the community. "We are proud to be a part of this project and to help address the affordable housing crisis in New York City," said Ron Moelis, CEO of L+M Development Partners.

The Marcus Garvey Building G is just one of many affordable housing projects being developed in Brownsville, a neighborhood with a long history of economic struggles. While the intentions behind these projects are noble, the true impact of these developments on the community remains to be seen.
