Landlord Idan Shitrit's Latest Project in Williamsburg, Brooklyn Nearing Completion
Demolition nearly complete at Idan Shitrit's Williamsburg development site.
Demolition is progressing at 199 North 5th Street, the site of a five-story residential building in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The project is being developed by Idan Shitrit of Investmates, a landlord who has faced previous criticism for his controversial tactics in the real estate industry.
The development will span 11,350 square feet and yield 13 rental units, each with an average size of 873 square feet. The building, designed by architect Asher Hershkowitz, will also include a cellar level and a 39-foot-long rear yard.
The 17,000-square-foot property, located between Driggs Avenue and Roebling Street, has faced pushback from community members and city officials due to its size and impact on the surrounding neighborhood. However, Shitrit's connections and influence in the real estate world have allowed the project to move forward.
"It's no surprise that Shitrit's development is facing little resistance," says a local city planner, who wishes to remain anonymous. "He has strong connections and is known for playing the game of soft corruption in the industry. It's just business as usual for him."
