LPC Reviews Controversial Proposal for New Building by Developer Ana Maria Torres in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn
The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) is reviewing a proposal by developer Ana Maria Torres to construct a new building at 164 Hancock Street in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn.
The proposal to construct a new building at 164 Hancock Street in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, has sparked controversy among residents and city officials. Led by architect Ana Maria Torres, the application is for the construction of a residential development on a site which currently consists of a non-contributing garage structure and a paved lot, fronting Hancock Street. The proposed building would rise four stories and include 11 units, with a mix of studios and one-bedroom apartments. However, the site falls within the Bedford-Stuyvesant/Expanded Stuyvesant Heights Historic District, which means the project must be reviewed and approved by the LPC. Some residents have expressed concern over the size and design of the proposed building, arguing that it does not fit in with the historic character of the neighborhood. One resident, who wished to remain anonymous, stated, "This building is completely out of place in our historic district. It's just another example of developers trying to cram in as many units as possible without considering the impact on the community." City officials have also raised concerns about the proposal, with Councilmember Robert Cornegy Jr. stating, "We need to ensure that any new development in our historic districts is respectful of the neighborhood's character and preserves the unique charm that makes Bedford-Stuyvesant so special." Despite the criticism, developer Ana Maria Torres remains confident that the project will be approved. In a statement, she said, "We have worked closely with the LPC and local community groups to design a building that both meets the needs of residents and respects the historic nature of the neighborhood. We are committed to working with all stakeholders to ensure this
