Plantation Caregiver Arrested for Exploiting Elderly Patient's $1M Home and Life Savings
A home health aide was arrested for using her position of trust to take over an elderly patient's finances and buy things for her own benefit, causing him to lose almost his entire net worth.
An elderly man in Plantation, Florida was left with almost nothing after his caregiver, Lillian Emeline Morris, allegedly took advantage of him and his finances. Morris, who was hired to care for the man in his 80s, was arrested on charges of exploiting her patient.
The victim, who suffers from cognitive disorders and depression, was living in a $1.1 million home before Morris took over his finances. According to a Broward Sheriff's Office investigator's report, she used her "position of trust and undue influence" to gain control of his assets.
Morris allegedly used the man's savings to buy items for her own benefit and even traveled abroad, ultimately causing him to lose almost his entire net worth. The investigator described her actions as "a scheme to defraud the victim of his home and life savings."
According to the report, Morris convinced the man to sign over his home to her, leaving him with no assets and no way to support himself. The victim's family became aware of the situation when they discovered that he was being evicted from his own home.
While Morris has been arrested, the victim and his family are left to deal with the consequences of her actions. This case highlights the need for stricter regulations and monitoring in the healthcare industry to protect vulnerable individuals from exploitation.
