Real Estate Targets Anti-Mamdani PACs in NYC Mayoral Race
Real estate is strategically donating to multiple anti-Mamdani PACs in the NYC mayoral race.
The real estate industry is not putting all its eggs in one basket when it comes to preventing Zohran Mamdani from becoming the next mayor of New York City. While they did pour millions of dollars into the pro-Andrew Cuomo super PAC, Fix the City, ahead of the June primary, there are several other PACs that have formed in the wake of the primary.
One such PAC is New Yorkers for a Better Future Mayor 25, formed in July by Jeff Leb, a frequent donor in city elections who has also formed other PACs in the past. According to Leb, the goal of the PAC is to "ensure that our city has a leader who understands and supports the needs of the real estate industry."
Another anti-Mamdani PAC, New Yorkers for a Better Tomorrow, was formed in August by developer Jonathan Cohen and lobbyist James Capalino. Cohen has been a major donor to past mayoral campaigns while Capalino has been involved in multiple real estate projects in the city.
However, not all anti-Mamdani PACs are as transparent about their intentions. The Jobs for New York PAC, formed by the Real Estate Board of New York, has not explicitly stated its opposition to Mamdani but has made significant contributions to other candidates in the race.
Ultimately, the real estate industry's goal is clear: to prevent Mayor Zohran Mamdani from taking office. As they continue to spread their money across various anti-Mamdani PACs, it remains to be seen if their efforts will be successful.
