Plans have been released for the redevelopment of 831-837 Madison Avenue in Manhattan's Upper East Side, with the project including a 16-story residential tower and restoration of three historic row homes. The new development is being designed by David Chipperfield Architects for Akris Inc., and is set to stand nearly 200 feet tall.
The project has faced some criticism due to its location within the Upper East Side Historic District, with concerns over the potential impact on the neighborhood's architectural character. However, SLCE Architects has been chosen as the architect of record for the property, and the development is expected to move forward.
The new tower will be located at 831 Madison Avenue, and will be joined by the restoration and partial expansion of the three late-19th-century row homes at 833-837 Madison Avenue. This will create a unique blend of modern and historic elements, with the new structure expected to complement the existing buildings.
"We are excited to bring this project to life and enhance the beauty of the Upper East Side," said a representative for Akris Inc. "We have worked closely with David Chipperfield Architects and SLCE Architects to create a design that respects the historic nature of the neighborhood while also bringing a modern touch to the area."
The project is still in its early stages and has yet to receive approval from the Landmarks Preservation Commission. However, if it moves forward, it is expected to bring new life to the area and provide much-needed housing options in the high-end neighborhood.
