Santa Ana City Council Unanimously Approves Redevelopment Plan by Segerstroms for South Coast Plaza Mall

The Santa Ana City Council has given the green light to C.J. Segerstrom & Sons' redevelopment plan for South Coast Plaza Mall, which will transform the shopping center into a mixed-use community with 1,600 homes.

The Santa Ana City Council members voted unanimously on Tuesday to approve a development agreement and specific plan for The Village Santa Ana project, proposed by C.J. Segerstrom & Sons for the South Coast Plaza shopping center. According to Voice of OC, the project is moving forward despite the city facing a projected $30 million deficit when the 1.5 percent sales tax Measure X expires in 2029.

City officials have recognized the need for quality economic development and believe that The Village project will bring not only new housing options, but also increased revenue for the city. Councilmember Roman Reyna stated, "This project will provide much-needed tax revenue for our city, while also creating a vibrant, mixed-use community that will benefit residents and businesses alike."

The redevelopment plan includes 1,600 residential units, as well as office, retail, and hotel space. The Segerstroms have also committed to provide affordable housing units and contribute to the city's affordable housing fund. While some residents have expressed concerns about potential gentrification and traffic congestion, city officials are confident that the benefits of the project outweigh any potential drawbacks.

"This is a win-win for the city and for our residents," said Mayor Pro Tem Vincent Sarmiento. "We are excited to see this project come to fruition and bring new life to South Coast Plaza Mall."
