State Commission Opens Call for Proposals to Honor Ruth Bader Ginsburg at Brooklyn Bridge Park's Pier 1
A state commission is seeking designs to honor the late Supreme Court justice at Brooklyn Bridge Park's Pier 1.
A new monument is in the works at Brooklyn Bridge Park's Pier 1, and it's dedicated to the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. On Monday, the New York State Commission on Judicial Nomination announced an open call for artist proposals to honor the beloved justice.
The commission is seeking designs that will reflect Ginsburg's legacy as a champion for gender equality and civil rights. "Justice Ginsburg was a trailblazer and a role model, and her contributions to our society deserve to be recognized and celebrated," said the commission's chair, Judge George Carpinello, in a statement.
The call for proposals comes after months of speculation and advocacy from local officials and community members. In September, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced plans to erect a statue of Ginsburg in her home borough of Brooklyn. However, the decision to place the monument at Pier 1 was met with some controversy.
Some critics raised concerns about the location, arguing that it should be reserved for local Brooklyn figures rather than a national figure like Ginsburg. Others questioned the process for selecting and funding the monument, which will be privately financed through donations and grants.
Despite the controversy, the call for proposals is now open to all New York-based artists or artist teams. The deadline for submissions is December 18, and the commission aims to select a design by early 2021. The selected monument will be installed at Pier 1 in 2022.
