Umeya Rice Cake Company Site Transformed into Affordable Housing in DTLA
Move-ins have begun for The Umeya, a new affordable housing complex in Downtown LA, developed by Little Tokyo Service Center at the former site of the Umeya Rice Cake Company.
The former site of the Umeya Rice Cake Company in Downtown Los Angeles has been transformed into a new affordable housing complex, with move-ins already underway.
The Umeya, developed by Little Tokyo Service Center (LTSC) at 412-426 S. Crocker Street, features a seven-story building with 175 studio, one-, and two-bedroom apartments. All of these units are designated for low-, very low-, and extremely low-income households, with half of them serving as supportive housing.
"Our family business has been a part of the Little Tokyo neighborhood since 1918," said Rex Hamano, president of Umeya Rice Cake Company. "Given Umeya's history and the community who supported us for nearly 100 years, the two are forever inseparable. We are truly excited to see the fruits of LTSC advancing their proud mission towards community revitalization and cultural preservation for generations to come."
The building, designed by FSY Architects, has a V-shaped footprint and includes two courtyards at street level. The podium-type building also features 13,000 square feet of ground floor space dedicated to community uses, retail, and service providers. The exterior of the building will have a mural by Skid Row artist Showzart and an exhibit honoring the history of the Umeya Rice Cake Company.
This project joins other LTSC developments currently in the construction stage, such as an apartment building in Chinatown at 823 Cleveland Street and a mixed-use complex near the Japanese American National Museum.
