Whelan Park Renovation Boosts Resilience in Nassau County's Malverne Village

Revitalization of Whelan Park in Malverne Village, Nassau County increases resiliency with new amenities and stormwater infrastructure.

The $6.3 million revitalization project at Whelan Park in the Village of Malverne, Nassau County has been completed, bringing new recreational amenities and critical stormwater infrastructure improvements to the space. Spearheaded by the New York State Homes and Community Renewal's Office of Resilient Homes and Communities, the project aims to increase resiliency along the Mill River watershed.

The project includes the installation of a new playground, basketball court, and walking paths, as well as the addition of green infrastructure to help manage stormwater runoff. The upgrades will not only improve the quality of life for residents in the area, but also help mitigate the impacts of future storms and flooding.

"Whelan Park is a prime example of how we can use green infrastructure to not only enhance our communities, but also protect them from the effects of climate change," said Governor Andrew Cuomo in a statement.

The project was funded through a mix of public and private sources, including a $2.9 million grant from the New York State Office of Community Renewal and $2.1 million from the New York State Environmental Facilities Corporation's Green Innovation Grant Program. The remaining funds were provided by the Village of Malverne and Nassau County.

The revitalization of Whelan Park is part of a larger effort by the state to increase resiliency in the face of climate change. Other projects include the development of green infrastructure and flood control measures in communities along the coast.
